Thrifting Isn't So Thrifty Anymore

 Happy Monday Everyone!

I hope you had a fun or restful weekend; whichever one you prefer. We had a busy weekend, but a good one.

Friday night we started out keeping the boys - Asa and Sunday.  Of course we had to go outside, which they love. Here they are trying to both fit in the jeep 😅 Yes, it's a pink jeep, but we found it on the side of the road, so free is free.

Swings were swung, bubbles were blown and one baby tried to eat a leaf and a stick, but all was well. Big brother played with his fire truck and other big trucks and we played until it was time to clean up, then we headed inside for baths. We had a great time with them and we all slept good that night. They are precious.

Saturday David and I had plans to go thrifting for a few things, so we headed to Goodwill first. Let me just say that I think Goodwill has forgotten what their mission is, which should be to supply items at a "thrifty" cost to consumers. However, they have now become more expensive than just buying some things new and I refuse to pay what they are asking, for stuff people no longer wanted.

I couldn't believe the prices on some of the items! We were able to find a few toys for the backyard and grabbed those for reasonable prices, but much of the home goods were way overpriced.

Our 2nd stop was to one of the libraries in Beaumont. A friend of mine works there and she had asked me to bring a set of my books there because they want to start a "Local Authors" shelf. Of course I was more than happy to donate a set. How exciting!

Next we headed downtown to a resale shop, looking for a patio table. We did find a few, but they all needed lots of work and for the prices, we decided to check on new tables instead. Sure enough, we found a table and chair set at Walmart for the same price as those with rust and torn chair cushions at the thrift store.

Are you seeing the theme here?

I miss the days of true thrifting, before it became trendy and now the stores think they are carrying gold.

I always think that they could actually sell stuff if they priced it right (and fair), rather than mark everything so high, that it sits in the store and doesn't get sold. But what do I know? In fact, when we were selling items before we moved last summer, I sold a small table to a lady who works at one of the antique/junk stores here in town. When I was browsing in that store one day, I saw my old table, which she bought from me for $50 and it was priced at $275!! I felt sick knowing that she had marked it up so high and some poor soul would be duped into paying that ridiculous price. It was sickening.

I think I need to start hitting garage sales instead of thrift stores. I hope they are still reasonable.

Sunday we went to church and I have to mention something here and see if anyone can relate...

I can't stay awake in church. There. I said it out loud. 😏 I fight sleep as soon as the pastor starts his message, but it's not him, I promise. He's a great preacher, but for some reason, as soon as I sit down and the message starts, I start getting sleepy. I actually think it's the lighting. In churches that are darker or the lights are dim, I'm fine. But in our church, where the lights stay bright the entire hour, I fight sleep and I think it has to do with my eyes.

Does anyone have this issue?

But, back to the day...

After church we picked up a hamburger for lunch and then we went to visit David's mom for an hour or so. We came back home, I worked on some bills, we ate dinner and by 9:00 I was ready for bed.

The weekend came to an end and I did too 😅

All in all, it was a great weekend. Nothing too exciting, but blessed, for sure.

Today will be all about school prep for tomorrow's Millie School, figuring out the meals for this week, doing some household chores and hopefully sitting down to read this afternoon. We shall see.

I hope you have a wonderful Monday and that leads to a great week. Everyone's having cooler temps, so it's a great time to be outside.

Until Next Time...

Blessings!

  1. I don't shop at Goodwill but I keep hearing how pricey they are. Our local thrift stores are still pretty reasonable.
The picture of the boys is so cute! Yes - free on the side of the road is the best! I found a Little Tykes Cozy Coupe for our grands that way.
I used to have that trouble in church when I was still working. I think it was because I was so busy and not sleeping enough. I don't have that now. I'm sorry you're dealing with it, cause it's no fun!

  2. I agree with you on the prices at thrift stores. They have to walk a fine line between keeping prices reasonable for people who shop there and maximizing their profit to provide services for whatever charity they are raising money for. However, it makes me angry that so many people 'shop' there for resale.

  3. I am SO glad someone else thinks this besides me! I always try to buy blue jeans at thrift stores because I think that stores price them WAY too high, but last time we went they were expensive too! That's insane. I've also given so so much to thrift stores so I feel like they should be reasonable. That's one place that inflation should not affect since their things are donated to them!
I am the opposite in church and fighting that, I'm trying to learn how to relax in church. Maybe its a good thing that you feel so at ease while you are there! I had a friend once who told me her son sleeps a lot when he comes home, but she feels like that's because he feels at ease and safe, so maybe its not a bad thing? My husband is the pastor at our church lol, so I'm always alert and find it hard to relax. I feel like I'm right there with him being all nervous for him- even though he doesn't seem nervous at all.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week!

  4. Your grands are precious and you can certainly see that the pink color didn't bother them at all !! Having your books in the library should get you a lot of new recognition, sure hope so. Hope you're having a Marvelous Monday!

  5. I do not shop Goodwill any longer. Prices are often higher than stores. I have a church thrift store I buy from and the proceeds go to feed the homeless. Yard sales still seem to be good pricing around here.

  6. Yes, thrifting has gotten crazy I've noticed. I can sometimes still find a few things here and there for a decent price. Even Facebook Marketplace is too much!

  7. If I feel sleepy at church I have half a stick of peppermint gum. Only half a stick because I chew gum like a cow so try not to in public! But I can chew politely with half a stick and peppermint is invigorating.

  9. We don't even have any good thrift shops around where I live. I don't even go and look anymore.
    Sounds like a great weekend.
No, I don't have that problem of staying awake in church. I get energized when I go. :)

  10. The boys are adorable. I agree, I give to the thrift stores, but recently TJMAXX is just as reasonable on the Clerance rack.
Being a former Pastor's wife for 50+ years, I had to stay awake (haha). Always sat near the front in "my spot" so I could give my dearest an eye of encouragment.
I was back in church for the first time in 3 months due to my health issues awating surgery. It felt good, and I did stay awake. haha.
Can I tell you a funny story? A woman complained to the pastor that her husband could not stay away during the sermon..He sugessted she bring a little limberger cheese in her purse and when he fell asleep, but a little under his nose. The following Sunday...sure enough, he fell asleep and she put a little cheese under his nose, to which he woke and said " Bertha, get you feet off the pillow". That's an old Pastor Joke.

  11. What a nice weekend! I haven't shopped in a Goodwill in a while, but I have certainly thought that when looking at estate sales. I like all of that, but it is always hit or miss with no rhyme or reason it seems of the pricing. I hope the rest of your week goes well with school and at home!

  12. Good morning Debbie.. Our local Goodwill has become a profit business. The prices are marked up double of what they should be. We do have another shop "Hangers of Hope" (this is where I take most of my items that I am discarding) and their prices are still very reasonable. At our church...they dim the lights so low during the worship and praise service, to where your body prepares itself for a good nap..Then, by the time the pastor comes to the podium and begins to speak, you are so relaxed that it's difficult to keep your eyes open. I see a lot of heads nodding. Not sure what the solution is. What a great idea to have a shelf dedicated to local authors. Enjoy a special week at Millie's school..

  13. Hi Debbie, I like to thrift shop at the Salvation Army as I find the Goodwill wanting too much for their clothes and items too.

  14. Your information about the high prices in thrift stores is very disconcerting. I seldom shop for much anymore except groceries, so this really surprised me. And the story of the table you sold and what it's being advertised for now, -- SHOCKING!!!

As for falling asleep in church, I've found that taking notes helps me to stay awake. Holding the pen and paper, writing, all that helps me. You are not alone. Cut yourself a lot of slack: at least you feel at peace in church!! (smile)

  15. Yes I agree. The prices are not thrifty

  16. Loved the title of this post! And you are correct! Not sure what the reasoning is...I mean, regardless of the economy, second hand/thrifting should still be cheaper than purchasing things new. Right? You made me smile with falling asleep in church. You know what they say...."at our age..." LOL, just kidding. I don't fall asleep in church (well, I'm teaching Junior Church) but you can guarantee every Sunday afternoon will find me napping on the couch. I do not nap any other day of the week. Don't even think about napping. But, come Sunday...I can barely last until 1:00!?!:)

  17. Oh look at those boys! They are so cute. I doubt they care at all about the jeep being pink. They look like they are having so much fun.
Thank-you so much for visiting my blog. I enjoyed my visit here! Have a nice week.

Friendly comments are always welcomed. I read them all, even though I don't always reply, just for the sake of time. But I am grateful for every one :)
