The Natural Rhythms of Life and Seasons

Hello Friends!

It's the first Monday of January and normally I would be chomping at the bit to start something new, because after all...new year, new month, new week...you get the idea. But this year I'm learning something that I've honestly never thought about before and it's really going to change the way I look at time and seasons from now on.

I (and seemingly the rest of the world), have always looked at January as the time to get our act together, start life again, do better, set goals, resolutions and be a better version of ourselves than we were just a few weeks ago. And you know what? Most of us fail within weeks of all the best laid plans.

So imagine my wonder when just recently I saw something on Instagram that talked about the seasons according to God, not the world, and it really made so much sense. Now I've seen others talk about it (hi Billie Jo!) and it's changed my perspective in the best of ways.

For years, I would jump on the January bandwagon of self-improvement and fail soon after. I never really got my act together on the new budget, any kind of goal, or cleaning out last year's files, until around March - 3 months into the new year. Every year I felt like a failure for it taking so long to conquer these tasks that I knew were important, but every year I would keep the same rhythm and not get going until March or so.

What I'm just now discovering is that this is the natural rhythm of life! I wasn't failing; I was reacting to the natural seasons, as God has laid out, with the winter months being slow and deliberately less productive, even regenerative for our bodies and souls.

Imagine a world where you allowed yourself to take January and February to relax more, hibernate, if you will, and slowly live in rhythms that coincided with the seasons. You slowly moved through your tasks, you slowly made plans for Spring, you slowly enjoyed this time of rest and renewal and allowed all of the frantic pace of the holiday season to melt away, one day at a time, by choosing rest over crazy.

Essentially you would start your year off with renewal and not more stress-induced goals, after having lived through two of the most stressful months of the year.

For me, this makes so much sense. It explains why I never felt like I was getting anywhere until months after New Years and it takes the pressure off of having to live in a constant state of stress.

The older I get, the more I think doing the opposite of what the world deems necessary, is the way to live. The world is always striving and stressing; grasping for more. But the rhythm of God's word is that everything has a season and the things that need to happen will happen in due time.

So now I can move through the next few months without guilt or insane expectations of myself. I can enjoy the slower pace of life without feeling like I'm behind and I can rest in knowing that Spring will bring new energy, new life, new excitement as the world comes to life at the proper time.

And for me...this will make all the difference in how I enjoy my winter.

Until Next Time...

Blessings!

  1. Thanks Debbie. I was making a post in regard to something similar and had this great thought and then hubby started talking to me and "poof" it was gone. Sigh, it happens, I guess...anyways, have a great day friend.

  2. This is excellent. It is a more peaceful life with rest and renewal. It is easy to think we can have all these resolutions and think we can change things, but that only comes through the Lord working in and through our lives. It is such a relief!

  3. Linda mentioned you in her blog and I hopped over to read this. I love it and agree the first part of this year encourages slowness and rest. While I don't make 'resolution's I still like to reset mentally while I have that slowed down calendar. There is room to think and plan in these quieter months and I need that. I know people dread this month and put a lot of pressure on it to suddenly do all the things, and make big changes, but I too am the opposite. I like to reassess in January and I appreciate the stillness to do that. Wishing you a lovely new year!

  5. Slowing down and taking stock is always a good thing to do.

  6. I love this! I just came from another blog that said something similar and I've also heard it from Billie Jo. I agree - January may be gray but it's a good time to stay home and putter! I love to use that time to organize and clean at my own pace.

  7. I just posted a bit of this on my blog too today. In the last few days I've been feeling the same. It nature rests during these months we should too. As a mom my calendar is full but I want to start being more intentional about resting when I'm home and not doing so much outside the home during this season. I do believe God gives us winter for a purpose. Thank you for sharing your thoughts (and I love Billie Jo's thoughts too).

  11. I love this post! I'm a goals kind of girl and I'm always excited to make new goals, but I totally agree with what you are saying as well. I read a book once that talked about that, how winter was meant for rest, how the crops didn't yield in winter and the days were shorter and the nights longer... I never thought of it being a time to rest and how we have really messed that up with electric lights and not allowing our bodies to go with the regular rhythms that God created. I'm certainly going to take this into consideration! So glad to be visiting with you again friend :)

  12. Yes, the graphics are very cute:) So many thoughts (and lessons learned) through seasons. You gave me things to consider here...although I really do enjoy the energy and motivation I enjoy at the beginning of January:)

  13. Switching from expecting to accepting. Wow. Has that been a principle the Lord has been impressing on me these last few years!!

With me, it’s more of a change from how people relate to me. My expectations are having to change to accepting these people as they are and not trying to change them nor be upset when they don’t respond as I think they should.

As the famous Disney philosopher, Queen Elsa sings, I’ve had to “Let it go!” Easier said than done, but in many cases, it seems to be the option I have to take if I’m to have peace.

  14. Sounds about right to me. I quit with high expectations and resolutions long ago. I just kind of go with the flow. It is a good way to reset the body.

  16. Oh my goodness, I was just having this (comment) conversation with another blogger! There must be something in the air. Nature does tell us to rest and restore our spirit in the winter, and for me it's also the first time in my 58 years that I've realized it. Here's to sacred winter rest

  17. Hi Debbie, I could live in that first M.E. image! Yes, for me January is a slow down. I find that if I did have resolutions they should be to slow down, do things with me purpose and intention. At my birthday brunch yesterday I asked my Mom and Dad (in their late 80s) for advice for me knowing me all these 53 years. My Mom didn't hesitate, "slow down". That's what she said to me. And a mom's advice? Perfection!

Wishing you and your family a blessed new year!

  18. Wow, Oh Wow! That third picture really resonated with me. I have a hard time accepting that others will not meet my expectations. I need to work on that. I am a perfectionist by nature and OCD. Everything must be in it's place, done right and in a timely manner...like...right now! It frustrates and stresses me out that others aren't like that.

    Grace & Peace,
    Pam
